What to Expect when Adopting Office 365
Setting the Expectations when Adopting Office 365
Adopting Office 365 for your business just might be the wisest investment you can make for your team this year. As with any investment, however, it is important to understand the details involved and to establish clear expectations. In this case, in order to ensure a successful onboarding process, understanding the time investment involved is a key component.
Let’s go over the process and timeline so you and your team will be in the proper position to smoothly complete this adoption.
There are two major components involved in adopting Office 365:
- Core on-boarding refers to the tasks that you require as a tenant, and the integration of these tasks with Azure AD. During this time, the baseline for other eligible services is established.
- Service on-boarding refers to the tasks required to set up Exchange Online, SharePoint Online, Skype for Business, Yammer, Office 365 ProPlus, and OneDrive for business.
When you purchase an eligible plan, the onboarding team will reach out to you within 30 days to set up a schedule of online meetings and establish checkpoints along the way. Alternately, within 90 days of purchase, you can reach out to Microsoft Support to initiate the process. Keep in mind, however, that the entire onboarding process must be completed within 12 months from the time of initiation.
Beginning with core on-boarding, the team will guide you through the steps to ensure your source environment is ready for use, as well as establish the minimum levels for on-boarding other eligible services.
Once core onboarding is complete, you will move to service on-boarding during which the team will help you onboard once for each eligible service in your package.
When you have completed the on-boarding benefit to onboard Exchange Online, or if your current environment passes certain tests and checks, you may be eligible to have Microsoft or a partner migrate mailboxes, as well.
Depending upon the number of services, number of licenses and the amount of data stored, this process can take up to the full 12-month completion date. Rest assured, however, with proper planning and communication between both parties, this process can be executed smoothly and in a timely fashion.
You can expect support provided remotely by assigned Microsoft personnel during normal business hours (according to your region), along with documentation and tools to assist you in the process. Should you wish for your Microsoft support team to perform configuration tasks on your behalf, you can provide the team with the appropriate access and permissions.
