Should You Choose SharePoint Hybrid?
Keep these tips in mind when deciding to use SharePoint Hybrid or SharePoint Online
If you’re investigating SharePoint as a way to improve communication and boost productivity within your organization, you have two options: SharePoint Online or SharePoint Hybrid. While SharePoint Online is fully hosted in the cloud and integrated with Office 365, SharePoint Hybrid takes a much different approach. In this blog we’ll introduce the platform and discuss the common question of whether to host SharePoint completely in the cloud, or both on-premises and in the cloud.
What is SharePoint Hybrid?
A SharePoint Hybrid environment is one where some of the services and content are hosted on-premises, while others are running on the Office 365 cloud-based platform. If Microsoft had their choice, everyone would host their SharePoint environments completely in the cloud, but this is not always the best fit for certain customers.
What is SharePoint Online?
SharePoint Online is completely hosted in the cloud via Office 365, and it is the direction that Microsoft is taking when it comes to many new features and technologies. The company has invested significant resources and focus into Office 365, so if your organization is interested in having the latest features available at all times, SharePoint Online may be a better fit for you.
Reasons why you might choose SharePoint Hybrid over SharePoint Online
There are a number of scenarios where you may choose to utilize a hybrid version that leverages the power of an on-premises solution with the versatility of the cloud. Several reasons why certain organizations ‘go hybrid’ include:
• Compliance: Some organizations have compliance or regulatory obligations that prevent them from storing data in a multi-tenant cloud environment. A hybrid SharePoint solution is ideal in these cases.
• Custom-designed solutions: Many organizations have spent significant resources developing custom solutions that would have to be completely redesigned for the cloud. SharePoint Hybrid allows customers to still utilize these tools, while also being able to enjoy some of the advantages of a cloud-based solution.
• Gradual migrations: Some companies are not ready to move completely to the cloud and would prefer a more gradual migration. A hybrid SharePoint solution is suitable, as it gives IT administrators a chance to slowly move data to the cloud and address any issues that may arise in the interim.
Microsoft is investing heavily in hybrid and cloud versions of SharePoint 2016
While some analysts thought that Microsoft would put the brakes on a slew of new features for hybrid customers of SharePoint, this has not been the case with SharePoint 2016. The company understands that certain organizations simply can’t move all of their critical data to the cloud due to a variety of restrictions. And these users and are being supported with the consistent release of new features for SharePoint Hybrid.
